Unalienable Rights

1962 did not bring the ordinary Jamaican much cause for celebration, the event was not independence for all but rather a transfer of power from one colonial master to the other. Only that the post colonial rulers do not believe its subjects are entitled to their rights.
Who said: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is to preserve these rights that governments are instituted" Thomas Jefferson.
Against this background i have to wonder what it is that we have had in Jamaica called government all these years, particularly since independence. A significant aspect of the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness most certainly has to include ones ability to defend his/herself. consider for a moment the current security situation in Jamaica. The government clearly cannot provide adequate security for its people, hasn't been able to for quite some years now, yet it refuses to admit this fact and take the steps necessary to allow its citizens the right to protect themselves.
So while politicians and those who can afford it rest assured in their electronic security systems, armed response teams, licensed fire arms and controlled residences the vast majority of Jamaicans are left at the mercy of those who seek to do them harm.

This begs the question then how long will it take for the current government to realise that failure to act now on this and so many other such issues threaten to undermine their efforts at cleaning up this mess we are in.

We have no RIGHTS?
